The Ivy Gate
A novella. In 1897 a private asylum in the Welsh borders admits a young woman whose fees are paid quarterly by a family that will not name itself and does not visit. Dr Havard is a reformer, kind by the standards of his profession, and entirely certain he is the most humane person in the building. He is probably right, and it does not help.
