Ballybrack lights nine fires on the first of February, in nine specified places, and has done so for longer than the parish has records. It is a nice bit of heritage and the county council part-funds it. In 2019 somebody lights a tenth, on a hill that is not one of the nine, and Máire Cotter has to explain to a Dublin superintendent why the town considers this considerably more serious than the arson it technically is.
