A Winter Commission
A portrait painter, unfashionable and in debt, is engaged for a winter by a household in the Sudeten hills. Full board, a generous fee, one condition: he may work only between eleven and two, and only in the east room. He agrees, because the alternative is not eating. The novella is ninety pages long and the reason for the condition is given on page seventy-eight.
