The Glassblower’s Wife
A glassblower in a Bohemian village is commissioned to make a vessel that will hold something the customer declines to name. He asks no further questions, because the fee is four years’ work and because his wife has been ill for two. He makes it. It holds. That is the first thirty pages, and the remaining eighty-eight are about what a village does with a man who has been paid that much.
