The Cartographer’s Sister
A imperial surveyor dies in 1889 leaving nine unfinished sheets of a border region and a sister who has been fairing his drawings for twenty years without credit. She completes them. They are better. The commission accepts them, publishes them, and the border moves — not on the ground, but in every document that matters, which turns out to be the same thing.
