The Quarry Wife
Cardew’s first book away from the marsh. A slate quarry above Coniston reopens after ninety years under a company that has done everything properly — consultation, ecology survey, a community fund. The village agrees. What the village does not do is explain to the company why the previous operator stopped, and the minutes of the 1934 parish meeting are not in the county archive because they are not, technically, minutes.
